FLOP was a series of exclusive 1 minute MP3 files (128 kbps/44.1 kHz) released on 3.5" floppy disks by Synesthetic Recordings in 2002 and 2003. One disk was issued at the beginning of each month and deleted by the end of the month. The files were then made available as free downloads. All the artists were friends of mine, and I did one disk myself, as Love Hz.

The whole concept was meant as a bit of a joke, as the name FLOP indicated that the floppy disk wasn't really a viable format for music distribution. Disk drives were too slow to be able to play the MP3 file on the disk in realtime, so the MP3 actually had to be copied to the harddrive before it could be played back! And the storage space on a floppy disk is very limited, so the tracks had to be short and in a lossy format like MP3.

Yet, I liked the physical format of the floppy disk, as it felt slightly arcane and archaic even back then. I bought the disks from a hardware store and made them to order. The labels were done on the barcode printer at my job back then, which was for a company making software for libraries.

The FLOP series didn't sell a lot, so there are very few people who own all the floppy disks. It was meant to go on for longer, but after a year I just couldn't be bothered to make them anymore...

The complete FLOP series is now available in other file formats for the first time, but please note that the masters are the original MP3 files!
